Mehndi / Henna is a complete sunblock . . . so if you get a tan when you are hennaed, the mehndi / henna may leave an unsuntanned pale pattern after it has exfoliated. You can swim, but if the water has a lot of chlorine, or you swim for a very long time, your mehndi / henna may bleach out and exfoliate more quickly than usual.
