Is the temporary, fashionable use of mehndi / henna sacrilegious?
Though mehndi / henna is used in the context of many celebrations, some of which religious, mehndi / henna is not in itself sacred. Mehndi / henna is applied by mothers, sisters, and friends, rather than by clergy. Mehndi / henna is most frequently applied in a home, rather than in a temple, church, synagogue or mosque. Mehndi / henna is considered auspicious and lucky, but is not required as a sacrament in any religion. Mehndi / henna is a cosmetic, which is used by women to make themselves attractive, for good luck and as a part of looking their best, rather than as a scared decoration for a spiritual purpose. Mehndi/ henna is part of the social celebration of life's events like: weddings, birthdays, naming, circumcisions, festivals, funerals, . . . and is very frequently used between the women of a family to strengthen friendship and familial bonds. Mehndi / henna is always regarded as beautiful, blessed and lucky, even as being effective in repelling malevolent spirits, rather than being specifically sacred. Mehndi / henna is a part of the world of household magic, not religious sacrament.
